Field Phenotyping

Field phenotyping in classical manner is the assessment of quantitative and qualitative agronomically relevant traits of field-grown plants.

Field crops research methods often rely on direct visual assessment and manual use of portable measurement devices. Breeders and scientist want to quantify

  • yield,
  • plant development parameters,
  • plant physiology parameters,
  • ecological biotic growth factors,
  • and stress response of field crops under realistic conditions.

Therefore precise screening seems to be an appropriate method to assist and extend punctual sampling in large areas. Considering the increasing amount of image-based measurement systems available nowadays, there is a strong tendency to use these non-destructive methods in the field as they are used in highly automated indoor setups. But compared to greenhouse and growth chamber phenotyping systems, outdoor equipment has to be robust enough to cope with harsh environmental conditions. That concerns the measurement system, robotics and the constructional framework. The high variability of environmentally
determined measurement conditions (especially changing light quality and quantity) pose a challenge to image-based measurement systems on fields.

Options to use LemnaTec Scanalyzer systems for field phenotyping

LemnaTec Scanalyzer overhead systems are rail-bound crane systems that transport a measurement platform in a height of up to 6 meters over a field of several hundred square meters. The platform is moved precisely and reproducible to an arbitrary number of image acquisition positions. Visible light, near infrared and infrared cameras take top view images of the field. A side view image option can be realised with an additional robotic arm attached to the platform. 3D scanners can add a third dimension to the camera information. All components are weather proof housed.
