Scalable Phenotyping with the LemnaTec CropScore System

The LemnaTec CropScore phenotyping system is an array of stationary cameras distributed in the growth area. The LemnaTec CropScore phenotyping system is powered by Computomics GmbH, Tübingen, Germany.

The CropScore system combines plant phenotyping capabilities by LemnaTec with the expertise in machine learning and high-performance computing by Computomics.

CropScore provides scalable, high throughput phenotyping using a large array of phenotyping camera pods, coupled to a central control and analysis system, and accessed via an easy to use web interface.

So far, phenotyping technologies have not kept pace with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and analysis. The full potential of NGS will not be realized without equivalent advances in high-throughput phenotyping. Thus, introducing CropScore, LemnaTec and Computomics bridge the gap in genome-phenome-relations.

With our easy-to-use web interface for storage and analysis, you can compare image datasets over time to get a long-term overview. How to apply CropScore in plant R & D?

  • Plants placed on tables, in trays, racks, on the floor, or directly in the ground
  • Camera-pods – small cameras coupled with miniature computers placed above the plants
  • Camera-plant distance and viewangle (= field of view) determine the amount of plants monitored by one camera-pod
  • Number of camera-pods is selected by field of view per camera and the overall area to monitor
  • Camera-pods transfer the images to a server (cloud or local)
  • Analysis takes place on the server – phenotypic parameters are extracted from the images
  • Time-course data per plant
  • Data visualisation and export

We bought a LemnaTec LabScanalyzer (the predecessor of PhenoAIxpert) in July 2018. The instrument was delivered to us and installed remotely by a Lemnatec technician that instructed us about the use of the instrument. We were happy about the service: very good communication and excellent instrument set-up. The Lemnatec LabScanalyzer works nicely and is even more user-friendly than we expected. Almost no training of new users is needed. We hope to expand the uses of the instrument to obtain additional phenotyping options in the future, by interacting with LemnaTec.
